Red Hat Dusting Off Its Fedora

Open-source software specialist Red Hat (Nasdaq: RHAT) has long been the top choice for enterprises with an interest in running the Linux operating system. Lately, however, the company has been caught in a crossfire between much larger companies, all seemingly intent on stealing a piece of Red Hat's pie. Ready, aim ... The first shot was fired last week by Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL) CEO Larry Ellison, who announced that Oracle would ship a Red Hat clone, renamed Unbreakable Linux, with support available at about half the price Red Hat charges. That platform will be pushed as the best Linux version for running Oracle's databases. "I don't think this will kill Red Hat," Ellison said at a press conference. "This is capitalism. We are competing." He also said that a "lack of enterprise-quality support" was holding Linux adoption back, and the move was designed to grow the total Linux market....

Eye examination can help diagnose cerebral malaria
Posted Wednesday, November 08, 2006 2:56:29 AM by Blog57 Team
Washington, Nov 7: Researchers in Malawi, Africa, have shown that by looking at the changes in the retina of the eye, doctors can determine whether an unconscious child is suffering from cerebral malaria or an unrelated illness. The researchers believe that children may have an incidental malaria infection whilst actually having another life-threatening illness, but if the child is unconscious, the diagnosis of the disease may become difficult. They hope that widespread use of eye examinations could greatly reduce the number of children dying from cerebral malaria. The study led by Dr. Nick Beare of the St. Pauls Eye Unit, Liverpool, showed that changes to the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, were the only clinical sign that could distinguish between patients who actually died from cerebral malaria, and those with another cause of death....

Red Eye: Pub proves that it's a lovely day for a Guinness

Finnigan's Wake, the newest addition to the Downtown Arts District, is a friendly pub where the levity and mirth are just as important, if not more so, as the drinks and the food. Its cozy charm and down-home demeanor make it an inviting gathering spot. And to prolong your stay, Finnigan's has five draft-beer choices available, with seven to nine more coming soon. Finnigan's also plans to have an extensive selection of wines, scotches, whiskeys and other spirits, and an extensive food menu offering traditional pub items from both sides of the Atlantic. Finnigan's logo amends the traditional Celtic image of the Claddagh (two hands, a heart and a crown), replacing the heart with a pint glass, which as we all know, is good for the heart. As the sign behind the bar says: "It's a lovely day for a Guinness." If the genius of the dark stuff doesn't strike your fancy and you want something different, Finnigan's will have scotch tastings every Tuesday night in which you'll get three different scotches to sample - which will surely grow more popular as it gets colder outside....

Soldiers are just relieved to be alive in Terrence Malick's "The Thin Red Line."

World War II arguably has been the richest source of cinematic material in history, spawning hundreds of films dealing with actual fighting, or the lead-up to it or aftermath of it. This week director Clint Eastwood, who was 11 years old when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, adds another entry in the genre with Flags Of Our Fathers, the story of the men who fought and died at Iwo Jima. Assembling a list of the top 10 World War II films of all time is a brutal task, because the definition of such a film can be broad or narrow. There are movies that deal mostly with combat. There are others set in specific areas of the war, like prisoner of war or concentration camps, naval vessels, air bases or boot camps. Still other films take place against the backdrop of the war, either at home or abroad....

Red tide may cause disruptions as shellfish harvest begins in Nov.
Posted Wednesday, October 11, 2006 2:54:37 PM by Blog57 Team
An algae bloom responsible for the phenomenon known as red tide is headed south from Port Aransas into the Padre Island National Seashore and may disrupt this year's shellfish harvesting season, which starts Nov. 1. The microscopic algae produces toxins that paralyze and kill fish, and contaminate shellfish. When airborne, the toxin can also cause respiratory and eye irritation in humans. It also causes the red water discoloration, which gives the phenomenon its name. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires that shellfish harvesting shut down when the organism is found at a concentration of just five cells per milliliter, as eating contaminated shellfish can cause a condition known as neurotoxic shellfish poisoning. The algae cell count in the harbor at Port Aransas has remained above 150 cells per milliliter since Oct....

EYE CANDY for Halloween
Posted Wednesday, October 04, 2006 10:57:06 PM by Blog57 Team
Are ghouls and goblins haunting you this Halloween? Try giving them an evil eye. Or even a whole platter of them. For a sweet take on eerie eyeballs, use marzipan, a clay-like paste of ground almonds and sugar that is easily molded. Marzipan is widely available in the baking section of most grocers. When buying, be sure it is soft. In this recipe, the marzipan is rolled into balls. An "iris" and prominent bloody veins are painted onto each using tinted white chocolate. A final glaze of light corn syrup gives the eyes that authentic glassy, half-dead look. For a simpler (though less convincing) version, knead severals drops of red gel food coloring into a 7-ounce package of purchased decorating marzipan. Divide the marzipan into 12 pieces, roll into balls, then press a chocolate chip into the center of each to create a pupil....

Walters claims Red Eye title
Posted Wednesday, September 27, 2006 12:53:51 PM by Blog57 Team
Kyle Walters has plenty of snook to his credit, but the one he caught Friday night at Sebastian Inlet turned out to be particularly special. It wasn't a trophy by snook standards, however the 12.95-pounder was a heavyweight by the slot limit standards. It was exactly 34 inches long, the maximum length limit for a keeper snook. "I measured him three different times because I wanted to make sure he was legal," Walters said. "It was a fat snook, and I knew it would give me some good weight." The snook, along with a 7.45-pound slot limit redfish and a 2.65-pound seatrout, earned Walters top honors in the all-night SISA "Red Eye" Classic hosted by the Sebastian Inlet Sportfishing Association. In addition to the top slam for the heaviest total weight of the three species, the 28-year-old Walters also took the top angler prize for the heaviest two-fish combination, a first place in snook, and a second place in redfish....
