| | | More skin infections reported | | Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 7:02:40 PM by Blog57 Team | | Washington Township High School officials confirmed two cases of an antibiotic-resistant skin infection this week. The cases of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus -- both in varsity football players -- occurred within the last two weeks, said Jan Giel, a spokeswoman for the Washington Township Public Schools. Giel said she could not provide more specifics. The students are being treated, doing well and are not contagious, district officials said. The district sent home letters with football players on Thursday about the cases. The entire student body will receive the letter on Monday because school was not in session this week, Giel said. Last month, there were seven confirmed MRSA cases at Eastern Regional in Voorhees and Haddonfield Memorial High School.... | |

The products - Zimaxx, Actra-Rx, 4Everon, Vigor-25 and Nasutra - could pose serious health risks, especially for people with heart disease, those taking heart medications or those at risk for stroke. | | | FDA Reminds Consumers of Serious Risks of Using Decorative Contact Lenses without Consulting Eye Care Professional | | Posted Saturday, October 28, 2006 2:59:14 PM by Blog57 Team | | This Halloween season, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is again warning consumers about the serious risks of using decorative contact lenses without the appropriate involvement of an eye care professional. These contact lenses, sometimes called Plano or non-corrective lenses, do not correct vision and are intended solely to change the appearance of the eye, but carry serious risks, including permanent eye injury that may lead to blindness. Consumers should only use decorative contact lenses if they have seen an eye care professional and have obtained proper lens fitting and instructions for use. Decorative contact lenses also carry the same risks as corrective contact lenses, including conjunctivitis (pink eye); corneal (the eye's outermost layer) ulcers; corneal abrasion; and vision impairment or blindness....

| | | How to escape the blahs, sniffles, and aches of winter | | Posted Saturday, October 21, 2006 2:53:38 PM by Blog57 Team | | People often ask how they can best remain healthy during the winter months. No wonder. Winter is a time of increased infections, loneliness, depression, and weight gain. People tend to drink more alcohol and have more dietary indiscretions. Some sleep too much, some sleep too little. Children and adults alike get less exercise and watch more television. So how do you keep yourself healthy? Exercise regularly First, make a plan for and commit to regular exercise. One half to one hour daily is suggested. Do something that you like. Feel free to vary the routine, or keep it steady, but force yourself to do it daily for the first two weeks. After that it becomes routine, and you will find it difficult to stop. Exercise burns calories, strengthens your muscles - including your heart, increases bone density, and releases endorphins in your brain, which are morphine-like chemicals that give you a sense of well-being.... | |

| | | 1-800 Contacts pitches new lens | | Posted Tuesday, October 17, 2006 12:54:03 PM by Blog57 Team | | The company, through its wholly owned Clearlab subsidiary based in Singapore, has unveiled a packaging concept for the disposable lenses it hopes to market. It maintains that packaging will simplify the use of contacts for consumers. "Most of the innovation that we've seen from manufacturers have centered around the contact lenses," said Allen Hwang, vice president of strategic marketing for Clearlab. "What we're doing is addressing the experience of wearing contact lenses." Those who wear contact lenses constantly deal with the hassle of using wetting solutions and often have to wrestle with their lenses. They risk infection if they are improperly handled, a threat that surfaced in a big way in May when Bausch and Lomb removed its ReNu with MoistureLoc product after some users reported serious eye infections.... | |

| | | Finding cause of spraying can take detective work | | Posted Saturday, October 14, 2006 10:53:10 PM by Blog57 Team | | Q. My 4-year-old neutered male cat has started spraying urine in the house. I recently adopted a 1-year-old spayed female cat. Could this be the problem? A. House soiling by cats is a common problem that can be uncommonly difficult to correct. Still, many cases are manageable with a great deal of patience and perseverance. Behavioral problems usually do not respond to therapy for weeks or months. A new cat in the house may indeed be your problem. But this does not mean the new cat has to leave. It takes some detective work by owner and veterinarian to identify the trigger that prompts a cat to start spraying. Diagnosing the problem may require you to take time off from work so you can keep a close eye on the cat's daily routine.... | |

| | | Improving the View: Treatment reverses macular degeneration | | Posted Sunday, October 08, 2006 6:54:35 AM by Blog57 Team | | People with a relentless eye disease now have a better-than-average prospect of recovering some vision, thanks to a new drug that takes a lesson from an anticancer strategy, two studies show. Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the elderly. In the less common, wet form of the disease, rogue blood vessels escape normal growth control and leak fluid into the macula, the area at the center of the retina that enables a person to see fine detail. As a result of fluid disrupting their sight, people with the condition often see straight lines as crooked. This form of macular degeneration can lead to legal blindness within months. Cancer researchers have developed a drug to stop the similarly aberrant blood vessel growth that's often present in tumors.... | |

| | | Virulent TB only 'airplane ride away' | | Posted Sunday, October 01, 2006 2:54:27 PM by Blog57 Team | | State health officials say tuberculosis is under control in Arizona despite growing national concern over imported drug-resistant strains of a disease that hasn't flourished in the United States since the mid-1900s. But authorities are still on the lookout for especially virulent strains that could come from Mexico or other countries. "It's just an airplane ride away," said Dr. Karen Lewis, tuberculosis-control officer for the Arizona Department of Health Services. .... | |

"It's just kind of hard to say where things are going to go," said Bernie Wilkins, who has owned City Drug Store at 101 S. College Ave. for nearly two decades. ....
