| Food with a kick | | Posted Thursday, February 01, 2007 2:55:22 PM by Blog57 Team | | If you're reading this, you probably don't have tickets to the Super Bowl or even a third cousin within driving distance of South Beach.??You're probably not in Miami waiting for a table at Joe's Stone Crab, hoping to dip succulent claw meat into a small vat of warm butter as tan and lithe bodies slink by.??No, you're stuck in this opaque purgatory that can't make up its mind whether to rain or snow or freeze.??While the beautiful people linger on the beach dangling pedicured toesies in the warm ebb tide of the neon evening, we pale further as the blood ebbs from our hinterlandic hides.??Well, I say, enough.??Damn the doldrums and pass the cold rums.??Embrace the empanadas. Jack up the Jimmy Buffet tunes.??Let's sate ourselves on jerk chicken in paradise while we search for that last shaker of salt.??Or, as Ernest Hemingway once said, "Hey, Snapper, don't Bogart that mango."??We probably shouldn't shed our parkas and romp mostly naked on the shores of Goose Lake, but we can still get our Caribe on around here.... | |

| | | RUNNING WITH SCISSORS (R) | two stars: Running With Scissors | Memoir's sharp wit loses edge in adaptation for the big | | Posted Friday, October 27, 2006 2:57:46 PM by Blog57 Team | | Almost every element in Ryan Murphy's Day-Glo vision of Augusten Burroughs' childhood looks and sounds genuine, from the avocado-green refrigerator and the all-yellow, all-the-time living room to Al Stewart warbling on soundtrack. Even the makeup raccooning Evan Rachel Wood's eyes and Annette Bening's hideous shag indicate the 1970s are at hand. But while the attentive art direction of Running With Scissors pays scrupulous and imaginative attention to period detail, the film overlooks its greatest asset: Burroughs. The author's excruciatingly hilarious, insouciant memoir about his increasingly bizarre life with a psychiatrist's family after his alcoholic father and self-absorbed, Anne Sexton-wannabe mother split up wastes no time on sentiment or sympathy. Burroughs is bracingly funny about the dilemma of being 13 and marooned among pedophiles, feuding siblings and other unstable sociopaths.... | |

| | | Ugly Betty | tv : ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY | | Posted Friday, October 20, 2006 6:54:37 PM by Blog57 Team | | Not to get all Joey Lawrence on you guys, but ''Whoa!'' Tonight, for the first time in its four-episode run, Ugly Betty gave me the chills, and to my surprise, said shivers arrived during a scene pertaining to the show's central mystery, the untimely ''death'' of Fey Sommers. Now mind you, up until (and even including) this week, I've felt that every scene involving Bradford Meade poking into or fretting over the power editrix's fiery car crash has fit into the Betty universe about as naturally as a copy of The Economist in a stack of Vogues, Elles, and Harper's Bazaars. But right at the end of the episode, as Daniel added the red music box to the Mode Christmas photo shoot, and it began to play that haunting little melody, and adorable Justin cued the snow to start falling, something wickedly unexpected happened: Stylish Grinch Wilhelmina chimed in with a line that, in the hands of consummate pro Vanessa (L.... | |

| | | PNP eyes volunteers to help fight terrorists | | Posted Saturday, October 14, 2006 2:54:48 AM by Blog57 Team | | ISULAN, Sultan Kudarat: The Philippine National Police (PNP) will recruit civilian volunteers and deputize them to help fight insurgents and terrorists in Central Mindanao. At a meeting of the Provincial Peace and Order Council held at the capitol of Sultan Kudarat Thursday night, the Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno said the volunteers will be hired as civilian auxiliaries to augment the local police forces in regions where criminals are most active. He added that the PNP will train the auxiliary force so recruited in the appropriate handling of guns and anti-insurgency measures. Puno, at the same time, ordered all governors and mayors in Central Mindanao to strengthen the governments intelligence networking system in the rural areas, especially in isolated villages. We must fight the terrorists in the broadest way possible for our protection, he said.... | |

| | | Pet Shop Boys unleash in the deep of the night | | Posted Thursday, October 12, 2006 3:05:28 PM by Blog57 Team | | Only a handful of musical acts in a generation can lay claim to forging a singular aesthetic, and the Pet Shop Boys is one of them. We're a quarter-century into the U.K. synth-pop duo's enviable career and a Pet Shop Boys track is still instantly identifiable as such. But it goes beyond the music, beyond the signature combination of Neil Tennant's cultured nasality and Chris Lowe's restrained electronic burbles the whole package's knowing confluence of buttoned-down British reserve and slightly camp gay-club abandon is what really marks the Pet Shop Boys. This, I've come to believe, is why the duo's performances, despite their tireless penchant for flashy mise en scene, always take an oddly long time to wind up beyond artful stasis to fist-pumping dance parties. Some blame for the slow crescendo during last night's Pet Shop gig at the Hummingbird Centre must, of course, go to the venue itself.... | |

| | | Rogue sprinkler rains on Telstra's big parade | | Posted Saturday, October 07, 2006 10:55:31 AM by Blog57 Team | | MELBOURNE, Oct 6 (Reuters) - A hi-tech strategy presentation by Australia's top phone company Telstra Corp. literally had analysts' eyes watering on Friday when a rogue sprinkler went off, giving participants a good soaking. Chief Executive Sol Trujillo was on stage with the chief executive of France's Alcatel, Serge Tchuruk, at the prestigious venue next to Sydney harbour when the sprinkler started up, sending analysts and executives running for cover. "It was one sprinkler, but it went off like a rocket and a lot of people upfront got drenched," said one analyst who was at the event but got away dry. Telstra later said it would resume the event, which had kicked off with the glitzy launch of a new A$1 billion ($746 million) broadband service, at another location. Telstra had moved the event to Sydney's Overseas Passenger Terminal this year after problems at the previous year's venue when the noise of heavy rain on a tin roof drowned out a speech by a top executive.... | |
