| ELDERLY PEOPLE LIVING ALONE TO RECEIVE FREE EYE CARE | | Posted Wednesday, February 07, 2007 2:53:58 PM by Blog57 Team | | Taipei, Feb. 6 (CNA) The Ophthalmological Society of Taiwan is calling on eye doctors to join a nationwide campaign to provide free eye care to elderly people who live by themselves. Pan Chih-chin, chairman of the society, quoted a study by the Cabinet-level Department of Health saying that 38 percent of old people troubled by eye disease are inclined to develop symptoms of depression -- about three times that of healthy old people. He added that eye ailments are not just physical problems but also psychological problems, and that the problems are even more serious among old people who live alone. Pan said the Ophthalmological Society of Taiwan is inviting more eye doctors to become "ambassadors" in the campaign to locate elderly people living alone with eye disease and offer them free treatment.... | |

| | | Seeing eye-to-eye with Cuba | | Posted Wednesday, December 13, 2006 12:57:51 PM by Blog57 Team | | FINALLY, but much to its credit, the Barbados Government has accepted Cuba's generous and widely appreciative "eye-care" programme. It has also given the official green light for recognition of degrees obtained by Barbadians who have qualified and others still pursuing professional qualifications in that Caribbean nation. The Government's announced policy ? welcome news for about 300 eye patients on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital's waiting list as well as all Barbadian students pursuing degrees in Cuba ? followed the fourth meeting of the Barbados-Cuba Joint Commission here last week. Other Caribbean Community states, as well as nations in Latin America and Africa, have long been recipients of Cuba's very extensive scholarships programme in fields such as medicine, engineering, education, and performing arts.... | |

| | | UPDATE: Bausch & Lomb Sags On Lowered Outlook | | Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 7:04:49 AM by Blog57 Team | | SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones) -- Shares of Bausch & Lomb Inc. sagged Friday after the eye care company said it now expects 2006 and 2007 results to come in at the low end of its prior estimates due the recall of its ReNu with MoistureLoc contact-lens solution. The product was pulled from shelves around the world last spring after it was linked to an outbreak of eye-fungus infection. Bausch & Lomb (BOL) shares were down $1.44 at $49.71 in recent dealings, off an earlier low of $48.85. The company also delayed the filing of its third-quarter Form 10-Q with the Securities and Exchange Commission. "Last night's release reinforces some of our concerns around Bausch and leads us to reiterate our underweight rating," J.P. Morgan analyst Michael Weinstein wrote in a research note.... | |

| | | HHS Document Recommends N-95s for Health Care Workers During Pandemic Flu | | Posted Friday, October 27, 2006 10:57:36 PM by Blog57 Team | | The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has issued a new interim guidance plan that calls for stronger respiratory protection than previously recommended for health care workers in the event of an avian flu pandemic. The document, titled "Interim Guidance on Planning for the Use of Surgical Masks and Respirators in Health Care Settings during an Influenza Pandemic," overrides recommendations made in last year's HHS's pandemic influenza plan, which stated surgical masks were appropriate and safe enough to use when taking care of pandemic flu patients. The new guidance advocates the use of N-95 (or higher) respirator masks for workers engaged in medical activities in which the likelihood of generating infectious respiratory aerosols is high. In addition, the guidance also dictates that the use of N-95 respirators is "prudent" for health care workers to use when providing other direct patient-care activities such as examinations or feedings.... | |

| | | Mass. Eye and Ear to hit suburbs | | Posted Saturday, October 21, 2006 2:53:59 AM by Blog57 Team | | The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary , searching for ways to boost its bottom line after years of operating losses, plans to follow the lead of other downtown Boston teaching hospitals by opening satellite clinics in the suburbs. ``We're moving in a new direction, outside the Boston area, with a new style," said Diane Kaneb , chair of the hospital's board of trustees. The 180-year-old hospital, which has 42 inpatient beds, will continue to offer advanced care at its central facility, alongside the Charles River . Branching into the suburbs could be key to the Harvard Medical School-affiliated infirmary's stability. Because of technological advances, many of its core services no longer require expensive inpatient hospital stays. Doctors have opened at least 15 outpatient centers in Eastern Massachusetts to perform a variety of eye surgeries, according to the hospital.... | |

| | | HEALTH MINISTRY TO REVIEW CDAP | | Posted Saturday, October 14, 2006 12:52:39 PM by Blog57 Team | | The Health Ministry will review the list of drugs in the Chronic Disease Assistance Programme (CDAP) following concerns from doctors about the efficacy of some generic medication on the list. This announcement was made by Health Minister John Rahael in his address to mark World Sight Day at a walk around the Queens Park Savannah last Sunday. The theme chosen for this year is Low Vision and Refractive Error. Rahael said CDAP offered affordable medication for glaucoma treatment and saved sight which may be lost due to economic hardship. However, he said, the Ministry has received concerns from the medical profession about the efficacy of some generic drugs and will seek to review and update the medicines, where feasible. Rahael said the cataract surgery initiative has achieved a measure of success in restoring vision but the Ministry recognised that cataracts were part of the aging process.... | |

| | | Eye of 59-year Carson City newsman closes | | Posted Saturday, October 14, 2006 10:53:29 AM by Blog57 Team | | You'll find about six inches of white space on page A6 of today's Nevada Appeal. It has been left blank intentionally to mark the death of Bill Dolan, who has filled the space with "Past Pages" for 59 years. The empty space is a visual mark representing the void left in the hearts of his family and those of us in his extended newspaper family, who learned of his death Thursday. We have columns from Bill that we could use, and his son and daughter will continue the column he began writing as a journalism student at the University of Nevada in 1947. But he will be missed. Each week, he would come into the offices of the Appeal with his pages in hand, stopping just long enough to share a tidbit of history he'd gathered that day and shuffle out. Former editors who have worked with "Scoop Dolan" during his career - 1947 to 1989 - really 2006, say his passion for newspapers and his nose for news were only surpassed by his care for people.... | |

| | | Fido has it really good at day care | | Posted Saturday, October 07, 2006 6:53:56 PM by Blog57 Team | | Business is booming in Denver's doggie day-care trade. Denver has 22 small specialized dog day-care centers, up from about half a dozen five years ago. Some facilities sport swimming pools, Jungle Gym-type play equipment and - for $51 for a full day and night - private suites with closed-circuit, flat-screen televisions featuring, yes, doggie movies. The growth has not gone unnoticed by City Hall, where the Denver City Council is proposing zoning changes that would allow more of the playgrounds for Fido. Centers also are popping up in Boulder, Castle Rock, Fort Collins, Frisco, Greeley, Parker and elsewhere. Terri Desnica, owner of Hounds on the Hill, near downtown at 960 Lincoln St., says it's no mistake that Denver is frequently voted among the most pet-friendly cities in America.... | |

| | | Health care put on back burner | | Posted Sunday, October 01, 2006 2:55:25 AM by Blog57 Team | | TALLAHASSEE Many Floridians are angry about the high cost of medicines and health treatments, so it's no surprise the leading candidates for governor say they want to improve access to affordable health care. But Democrat Jim Davis and Republican Charlie Crist have yet to put health issues at the top of their campaign agendas, despite evidence that the rising cost of prescription drugs and doctor and hospital visits is a high priority to many voters this year. .... | |
